BEAUMONT, Charles Edward

Charles Edward Beaumont was born in the Strand, London on the 29th of July 1897 to Alfred Beaumont and Emma Jane Moore, the younger of their two sons. On Charles’s birth certificate and in the 1901 census Alfred gave his occupation as ‘Chemists Assistant’ but he then ran a Grocer’s shop at 65 Manor Street, Chelsea. In the 1901 census Charles and his brother Alfred Richard were with their maternal grandparents in Norfolk. Charles was educated at Ashburnham School in Chelsea and St George’s College, Kingsway.

In February 1917 he enlisted in the Middlesex Hussars (1st County of London Yeomanry). He was in the 2/1st Brigade, a Training / Reserve unit, which was stationed in England until May 1918 when it moved to Ireland. By October 1918 he had been promoted Lance Corporal. Charles Beaumont was on his way home on leave when he travelled on RMS Leinster on the 10th of October. He did not survive the sinking, nor was his body recovered. His death was reported in the Chelsea News and General Advertiser on the 18th of October. His name is recorded on the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton.
